I've lost the only key to my 2000 Land Discovery Series II is there any way to replace it without taking it to the dealer for the code key. The dealer is 100 miles away and I can't get it there without the key

 

you have 2 options

1 - find the key

2- find a dealer

 

Call the service manager, especially if you have been there before, ask him to get the key code for you and fins a local lock shop to cut a blank.

 

Well I tried that and the person I spoke to in the service dept said that they can't do anything other than get a key to unlock the door by using the vin # but to start it I need to bring the vehicle in to them. When I talked to a local locksmith they said the same thing about the code key, but the dealer says that can't be done. I am so confused.

 

They are talking about a computer chip in the key, that chip has a code in it, without the correct code the engine will not start.
You DO NOT have a code key.
Your remote has a code and needs to be programmed by the dealer.
Call the local locksmith back, have him cut you a door key, you need your wallet out of the glovebox and can he please get you a key so that you can get inside the truck.
Take said key and drive away.
