There is absolutly no way to know for 100% if the coolant is reponsable for all head gasket problems or not.
Since 90% of the people with DII's are the second or third owner and the head gaskets seem to go bad around 80-90,000 miles there is really no way to know if it was ever changed per LR's recommendation or not.
We need people who either are the oiriginal owner or have bought a low mile LR and have had the coolant flushed per LR recommendations and then see how long the head gaskets last.
GM had the same problem with intake gaskets going bad around 90-100k after they switched to DexCool.

ok, so what do i need to do to eliminate the other possibilities? im getting ready to go flush radiator and install new radiator hoses (i will check the thermostat while im there too). i will check the water pump seals while im under vehicle. what else?
mostly i want to make sure it is in good enough shape that i wont hurt it any worse by driving it to the dealership/recommended mechanics place - is that possible?

Dont just "check" the t-stat, replace it. It is a $10 part and you can get one from AutoZone. Make sure that you install it the correct way, install it backwards and you will overheat. Mark the front iof the old one with a Sharpie when you take it out.
If after you flush the cooling system you car still overheating then I would say the water pump is not pumping water fast enough.
Replace your hoses, t-stat, flush the system and refill it and bleed it then drive it and see what happens.
