I was driving it last Saturday, and it just died. It would not start anymore until maybe 5 hrs later when it cooled off.I let it run idle for 10 minutes ..sure enough it died again with flashing "M" and "S" (mode light?) in the dash board. ...and wouldn't start again until sunday.

I have a 2000 discovery 2.. 100,500 miles.. Its been running great until this Saturday.. Haven't used it since. I've had the Service engine light on for almost a year now.. fault code is for the mass air flow sensor. i cleaned it once and warning light came off...for 5 minutes. Why does it stall? Can it be the mass air flow sensor finally gave up?.. why wouldn't it start when engine is not cold? what are the flashing M & S mean?

What should I do.. can't afford to take it to the dealer.. Any suggestions?

You might have a failing battery/alternator. It is common that this will cause stalling and starting problems and the low voltage will cause your tranny warning lights to come on. So go get your charging system tested and the go by a tranny shop if those lights are still on and have then read and clear your codes.

Could still be the battery, wouldn't be the first one to fail. Make sure all your connections and clean and tight. Something has to be knocking down your voltage, go have it tested.

I started the LR today. to my surprise it started smoothly like there is nothing wrong. The service engine light was gone,,, the M and S are not flashing. however eight minutes later it just started to rev by itself and eventually died. It would not start anymore.. the M and S lights are not blinking anymore.
a dealer appointment has 2 weeks waiting list. anymore suggestions? since i got the truck... my cruise control never worked too. i found a MAF(ERR7171) on line..in england it cost 149$ plus shipping.. and in long island 199$ free shipping. can it be the MAF?

I got a new battery last month and had the same problem as you a couple weeks later - it was corrosion on the terminals. The installer had run out of protectant they usually put on the terminals.

Cleaned terminals with a foam they sell at Wal-Mart and no more problems.

Aren'tthe S and M different transmission modes ??? maybe it has to do with the tranny.
