Question Help Needed

I just purchased the 2003 Discovery with 58,000 miles, the vin falls before the vin range for the engine. It will not start. Come to find out later, a dealership in VA replaced the fuel pump for this problem, then a dealership in MD replaced the crank sensor and spark plugs (in FEB) for this problem, it sat until me and now it is stuck at that same dealership not starting and they are saying they think the cam timing is off? The service manager says that it may be a broken rocker arm or something along those lines because they rarely have had trouble with the timing chains. When i looked at it the engine compartment and engine were clean, not clean like used car lot clean but clean as in no leaks, etc.

Any thoughts, history, advice would be great. I bought it being told it runs, and can not afford a $122.00 per hour labor rate engine repair. I am fighting with the person I purchased it from to pay for any repairs.

It sounds to me like this dealership is parts replacing and did not solve the original problem.

He's right that timing chains do not usually break especially with that low mileage. A broken rocker arm should just shut down the one cylinder not the whole engine. I suggest you search around and find a good rover mechanic and take it to him.

Once you get it home start by checking for spark at each cylinder.
Report back to us what you find and we will take it one step at a time.
Its going to be ok, prob just somthing simple and stupid.

when you get it home, check for fuel pressure and then check for spark. I have had dealers replace the CPK before, and I had to replace it 100 miles later. They fail, and I wouldn't totally rule out failure again. How long since the last CPK change? if it was done by a dealer, you have a 1 year warranty on it. Tell them to swap it out again.

Thanks all, Disco Mike gave me a call and gave some insight also. Much appreciated.

It is great to have this as a resource, makes it easier. I hope to get it home from the dealer this week. It is 2.5 -3.0 hours away.

I got the LR for a low price, but was told it ran. What I am pretty sure happened was that the dealership it was at thought they fixed it. But the same intermittent problem is still there. The dealership says right now they "may" take care of the repair when they find out what it is. They are at least diagnosing the issue for free.
