Default Help Please! 2003 Discovery 2 oil pressure question

Hello all,

I recently purchased a 2003 D2 that has a ticking at idle. I only paid $500 for the vehicle and other than the ticking it is in excellent shape. This is the first rover i have had that has absolutely no oil leaks whatsoever and is spotless on the underside. I have had 7 Rovers including 2 1971 Series iia's 2 classics and 2 P38's but this is my first Discovery. I have been reading up on the horror stories on the slipped liners and oil pressure issues with this year disco. The ticking sound does not seem the same as lifter ticking that i have heard in the past so i assumed that this vehicle may have a slipped liner. Today i purchased an inexpensive oil pressure gauge from autozone and this is the results i came up with

Cold Idle 50psi
Cold 2000 RPM 50psi

Warm Idle 5psi
Warm 2000 RPM 20psi

There is absolutely no rod noise or bearing noise i can hear when warm just the ticking at idle.

Should i replace the oil pump and go from there?

Does the ticking start after the engine is warm or is it present when you have high oil pressure too, when it is cold?

Yes, Oil pumps are a common fail point in every year Disco.

while cold the engine purrs like a cat...no noise or ticking whatsoever..ticking starts gradually after about 10 min of idling and as far as i can tell seems to diminish at 2000 rpm but instantly reappears at idle

Everything you are saying is indicative of a slipped liner. BUT I don't have first hand experience. Only what I read here.

You can work to lower your temps. The liner slips as things get hot. People have had success keeping the engine below the temperature which the ticking starts.

Do you know your real time running temp?

Start with an oil change to 15w40 oil or 20w50 - see what your oil pressure is after that. If it does not come up you can check the pump gears (I did the same on a 2002 I had). If the gears are good but the oil pressure still won't come up when hot then you likely have very worn cam bearings/crank bearings - it bleeds enough oil pressure the lifters won't stay pumped up at low rpms. You can rebuild it or ...

Good luck.

first things first. Pop the front cover and check the oil pump.

If you look at my recent post I wasn't having any oil pressure issues what so ever and my oil pump gears exploded, and I mean that it actually exploded. If you are having oil pressure issues you should absolutely check the oil pump gears. Many people have had the exact same issues you are having and pull the front cover to discover that one of the gears is cracked. Anyways here is my post from the rebuild I just did.

well got the front cover off finally...the previous owner thought that it was good idea to use red loctite on all the bolts and also used a punch on the fan bolt which i had to drill out to get the fan off! but anyways here is what i found

there is also very slight scoring on the front cover, barely noticeable with a fingernail, should i replace the front cover also?

Im surpised that you didnt have an oil light @ 5 psi. As the cover you always take a chance reusing any cover, might want to price a better used one.

Got to love RED locktite

Hit up Tarheel Rover, he sold me my used cover at a great deal. I was able with his an Erik at lucky8's help get the oil pump repair done for around 250 with shipping charges and everything. I of course did some extra work while I was in there to the cooling system but good luck job isn't too bad as long as you take your time.
