So lately the steering wheel in my 2004 Disco shakes when I accelerate but only while I am pressing the gas, speed doesn't seem to matter or if I am just coasting. Also when I turn my steering wheel at low speeds I hear a clunk noise or a pop. I changed my Drag link, track rod, and panhard rod to new heavy duty ones as well as Heavy duty extended driveshafts front and rear. I also changed my sway bars to quick disconnect sway bars. After inspecting I found that my power steering box is slowly leaking fluid but my power steering reservoir is full. Any ideas?

 

Check the ball-joints and C/V joints. Also, look at the radius arm bushings for movement.

 

Thanks for the quick reply, Just changed the front radius arms to castor corrected ones with poly bushings so I don't think that's it but I will double check to make sure, How could I tell if my CV joints and ball joints are bad?

 

Tie rod ends will clunk when they're loose. Might wanna make sure they're all tight along with the panhard rod.

 

Jack it up safely, and have someone turn the steering (running car) while you inspect all those joints.
If nothing jumps out, then lower the front end a bit so it's touching the ground (applying some load) and repeat.
Keep lowering it and turning back and forth and inspecting, I'll bet you see it.
If it's popping, it's moving, and likely you will hear or see it.

 

Sorry for the late response. Checked panhard bar and tie rod ends everything looks tight. There is a pretty decent leak coming from the front of my power steering box not sure if that would contribute to the clunking if my power steering fluid is constantly topped off. I haven't been able to get around to further diagnosing due to finding a leak in the headliner. Water is seeping into the carpets in the back so I decided to tackle this problem first so I don't ruin my carpets. I had to take them out and fix the rust under them as well as now changing the headliner to fix the drooping headliner problem while I have it out.
