help: window in drivers door 2003 Discovery
HI all.... My driver's side window (left front/American) of my 2003 Discovery SE (55K miles)was being closed via power windows at the car wash today.....and then all of a sudden, right before it was completely closed, I heard a piece of metal fall to the bottom of the inside door panel, and now the window will not close all the way and slides slowly down as i drive.
My question is this....with the holidays here and money tight, I don't want to go to the local Rover dealer and spend millions. Is this (a) fixable myself and easy; (b) some neighborhood mechanic should be able to fix it; or (c) I'm overreacting and the Rover dealer can fix it in an hour, cheaply.
Power window motor, for all sides, is audible and working. Other windows are fine.
Thanks all.....

Well if you know how to or can get the door panel off that would be the best place to start. I would say first off you should see what fell to the bottom. It sounds like your regulator is messed up of the window is falling down. If you can get the door panel off without breaking it, then you should be able to do the entire fix yourself. After the panel is off there are only like 5 bolts to remove and it is pretty self explanitory when you are looking at it.
But like I said you need to see what broke before you can tell how hard it is to fix.

Use some duct tape to secure the window glass to the top of the window frame and pull off the door trim. Have a peek inside and see what fell down.
This is classic window regulator went bad, this is one of the reasons I keep my window rolling to a minimum.
www.roverlandparts.com for a used window regulator, and any mechanic can fix it, or body shop, or maybe even you.
www.atlanticbritish.com for a new one.
Also call your dealer and price the part and then price the job.

My regulator broke tonight at a drive thru. I pushed the down button and the window went all the way down but the motor kept running. I pushed the up button and the window did not come up. Drove home 20 miles in the rain with the window down. I took the door panel off and found that the spot welds holding the gear on were broken. I drilled thru the spot welds then welded thru the holes and the ends. I cleaned and grease the roller tracks. I measured the plastic rollers so I can make new ones at work for the passenger side. One of the rollers is broken.

Wille-do you think a person could use really short sheet metal screws or a nut and bolt to fix the window regulator?
Drill out the spot welds and then bolt them back in place? Is there enough room? Will it bind?
I dont think JB Weld would hold up, but maybe?
EDIT-as far as your broken roller goes...this is for a DI but maybe it will give you a idea.

Spike- I think you could use some 10-32flat head socket capscrews with flat washers and nylock nuts. You would have to drill through both pieces and then countersink the gear so the screw is flush. I would drill it the same size as the screw. There is a lot of torque on this gear so it needs to be attached very securely. The slightest amount of movement in the attachment will quickly cause the holes to oval and the gear to jam fro being misaligned.

i just replaced my passenger side regulator last week.
getting the door panel off is easy.
just remove the window strip at the top of the panel. then remove the screws around the door panel. then gently pry the door panel away from the door. once you can gain access unplug the speakers. then just pop it off.
from here you can gain access to the 8mm bolts that hold the regulator to the door and the window. unbolt it, unplug the window motor and just work it out of the door.
then reverse the process.
all in all it took me about a hour to do the swap and it was my first time. if you are decent with a wrench then its not a big job.
