I like the set in the chest tbh, looks very good value. What ever tools you buy you will never have enough and will always be adding to it. With ref to 1/4 drive stuff, yes 3/8's is good for most things, but sometimes a 3/8 ratchet is just to big to get in, so the 1/4 stuff is VERY handy

Been buying mine for 18 years and still add to it, my tool chest in the garage is full to the brim and 6ft tall.

The other thing is, that chest set is nice and portable and contains a lot of stuff, so you can easliy throw that in the car and take it with you.

This would be a VERY worthwhile addition to a landy tool box

and this as well

Both of them being the sort of tools that when you need / use them, you'll be very glad you had them

Start with the basic

Socket set, and yes 1\2 and 1\4 are useful. You might want to add 12 points sockets too.
Screwdrivers, pliers and vise grips.
Those in metric and SAE can become really handy, even more than a ratchet

You might also need a small propane torch to heat in case of a stuck bolt. Punches and chisels, a good hammer.

And of course a nice toolbox to keep those

so compared to the abs amigo, i'm giving up the ability to clear abs codes, but adding much more real-time scanning ability?

robover- why'd you pick the Actron? it is quite a bit cheaper...

Hi Oysterhead. I picked the Actron CP9145 mostly based on price and a prayer. I was hoping for a unit that would read/erase codes, read live data and be able to freeze frame data at the time the CEL/MIL light was triggered. I am not expert on scanners but this unit seems to be doing all that.

I keep getting p0171 and p0174 which is lean on both banks. Common knowledge on these codes leads one (or at least me) to believe that I am having O2 issues. What I learned from the scanner's live data was that the O2's are metering properly and within accepted voltages. Also, because both banks are failing together, it is unlikely that both front O2's are failing at the exact same time.

Next up is the MAF. The scanner is showing that it to is functioning. I have to look a little closer at the live feed data to determine if it is running within acceptable voltage ranges. To do this I am going to have to find a friend to drive while I watch it as it is based on load and accelleration and stuff so I have not been able to totally rule it out yet.

BUT, in the freeze frame mode when I am looking at the exact moment the computer in the car (ECU) tripped the check engine light, I can see my short term and long term fuel trim on both banks. This scanner (with a not inclued 9 volt battery) can be brought in to my comupter (I mean, I can bring it in to my computer, not hook it up to my computer - you might be able to do that but I don't know yet), go to "review data" mode and I can Google this data: ST FTRM1, ST FTRM2, LT FTRM1, LT FTRM2, see the values to research what they are and should be. My LT FTRM (long term fuel trim 1 & 2 [both banks]) is reading very, very high.

From all this I have gotten to the point where I am 75% guessing I have a vacuum leak and 25% guessing I have a bad MAF. With a little more research I should be able to figure out the problem without spending a dime. If I had just guessed, I would have gone after the O2's first, spent about 250-300 dollars replacing them all and not solved the problem. Next I would have went after the MAF and spent 200-ish and maybe have solved the problem and maybe not. Instead, because of the scanner and a lot of Goggling and asking questions on this awesome forum, I am seaching first for a vacuum leak which is either free or pretty cheap to do as well as a vacuum leak which is probably cheaper than all 4 O2's replaced and the MAF.

So to make this answer even more exhaustive, I spent 89 dollars on this scanner and shipping from Amazon was free. I Googled the unit and most places were selling it for 200 plus but did find one place for 123 plus shipping. I didn't know it would be good but I am very happy so far with the purchase. Because it told me the O2's we ok, it has already paid for itself at least three times over on it's first CEL/MIF. I will be using this scanner on my Rover a lot I am assuming but I will also be helping friends save the 100-ish bucks the shop charges to read their codes or save them from getting the crap advice most employees give when you have the codes read for free at Autozone or Advanced. So I believe it is the most important tool I have ever owned when it comes to fixing a car. I think back to all my past problems and think about how in the dark I was trying to diagnose CEL on all my past cars. Now that I am "in the light" I can never go back to the days of guessing out a problem.

Is it the best scanner out there? I don't know. I see there is a Rover specific one but it is way out of my price range. There are others I looked at that also did a heck of a lot as far as interacting with your PC and stuff that I would love and will do in the future but again way out of my price range right now. This thing was reletively cheap and it has already paid for itself. I also love playing with it and feel like I am learning a lot. Between the big brains on this forum, this scanner tool and Google, I am feeling more confident about being in control of my Rover than I ever have. I like to do my own work and a lot of mechanics lie. Now I have more power to deal with both those things and it feels damn good.

I have no affiliation with Amazon or this scanner in any way and am not endorsing it in any way. I don't even know if it is good compared to others because it is my first. But I am very happy I bought it. I'll put a link to the exact thing I bought below. Feel free to ask me any more questions if you have any. As you can see, I can write for days when it comes to one of my passions. And Land Rovers are definately now one of my passions. I have drank the kool aid.

Side note. I chose the "$25 Super Shipper" free shipping option they offer for any product that sells for over 25 bucks. It told me on the day I ordered, November 18th, that I might not get it till the 27th and offered faster shipping for various prices. I wanted it fast but bucked up to my impatience and stayed with free. I got it the 22st via USPS which, had I picked one of the pay ship options to get it that quick would have cost an additional 12 bucks. The longest delay I saw through tracking it was Amazon getting it out of their warehouse which they might do on purpose? I am convinced that faster options are a shame and will never pay for faster again unless it is an item I need over night or second day of course.

Yes. I have definately cleared the codes with this scanner. I do not believe it will clear 3 amigos but I'm not sure anything but a Rover specific one will? I luckly do not have those...yet...but it is my understanding that only the dealer or a rover specific scanner can handle the evil three. FYI, someone just listed another scanner question and it is getting some replies as well. Check that one out to because, like I said, this is just my first. Not sure if it is the best for the price.
