high pitched whine from engine
I've had my '01 Disco II for almost a month now. Recently (the last few times I've started it) there is a high pitched whine from the engine compartment that lasts for about 30 seconds or a minute. It sounds like a vacuum cleaner for lack of a better description. I'm wondering if anyone knows what that is? I finally got my RAVE CD but the workshop manual alone is over 1600 pages so it's going to take me awhile to browse through it. There's also a 250 page technical manual that does a pretty good job of giving a description of operation for just about all of the systems - pretty interesting stuff.
So far we really, really like this truck but with all of the gadgets and gizmos it sure does make some strange noises once in awhile. I'm just trying to get a handle on what they are about.

YES! I have the same thing with my '03 Disco! What the heck is that? It does sound like a little vacuum cleaner. I'm glad to know I'm not going nuts, Love the truck though.

Could be a bad belt, a bad tensioner which is common oe a bady pulley. There have been some TSB and a couple of recalls over this issue or the years.

Mine too has a pesky whine, i've got a 95 disco and shop foreman at the LR dealer told me it was from a seal in the water pump... it only happens at idle while the engine is warmed up and won't cause any real damage as long as the waterpump bearings are still good. I swear these things have so many quirks...
if nothing else, call a dealership and ask them about it, calls are free

to trouble shoot the problem. put some belt dressing on the belt and see if this solves the problem. If not take the belt off and start the motor. if the noise is gone the problem is localized. don't let it run long. the water pump is not working. If the problem is not found, check all vaccum lines to include the line to the pump. check around the throttle body. you may have a clogged air intake port. located on the sides of the throttle body (should be cleaned every 30k miles. check the accelorator diaphram for leaks. The most common cause is the belt, the tensioner, bearings in the water pump, alternator, a/c compressor. these should be eliminated when you take the belt off and start the motor. hope it helps. gotta love a rover. duboff
Cool, I'm bringing it in tonight for other stuff. Pesky dash lights! ABS acting wierd ,squeaky belt etc...
The sound is more like a small blower motor that runs for about a minute right after I start the car. By the time I clear the gates of my neighborhood it's turned off. When it turns off, it sounds like it's a very deliberate shut down. As though this fan or whatever is supposed to run for a certain amount of time and then shut off. It's probably normal, I just wonder what it is.
Thanks
