Default High Pitched Whistle at 60-70mph.

For a few months I've been getting a really high pitched whistle when on the gas between 60 and 70mph. It 'sound' like wind whistle but it can't be because the instant I remove my foot from the accelerator it stops. I've also noticed that when I start the vehicle I get a similar whine from the rear of the vehicle. It has been suggested that it could be the fuel pump, of course a new fuel pump being nearly $500 I'd like to explore the options as well.

Does it sort of sound almost like it's coming out of your speakers? Iv'e noticed that a bit if I pay real close attention sometimes.

Sound like it yes, but is it.. no... because it is still there without any speakers in the vehicle.

Could be transfer case whine. My disco 2 seems to do that at that speed only when I am on the gas and it is high pitched like your describing maybe try changing transfer case fluid but it is somewhat normal to have a little whine from it.

Well, tomorrow morning my new 'used' transfer case goes on so if it's that... but it really seems too high pitched for that. The high pitched noise from under the rear when it's running also seems to suggest something further back unless it's two separate problems. Could be, hopefully when I pick it up tomorrow the noise will be gone.
