Default HO alternator suggestions.

Its time for a new alternator. I would like a high output because of new driving lights up front and an aftermarket audio system.I assume a group 34 is the correct battery for a 2000 Disco. Please correct me if I am mistaken. Does anyone have experience in purchasing a high output alternator for their disco? Where did you buy? Type? Brand?

Any alternator purchasing experience would be welcome.

Group 24 is correct, but not everyone makes one so 34 works. It's shorter, so it requires the spacer under it. The TD5 discovery have a group 31 battery which is even bigger than the 24 and should also fit, but I haven't tried it.

The stock alternator is 130 amps, but you can use a late 1999 to 2002 range rover p38 alternator. It's 150 amps.

I'm picking up a RR 150 amp alt tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion. The extra 20 amps will be appreciated.

I want to buy a diehard platinum battery but I am limited in my area and they are not available. Optima yellow top is and will most likely be my choice. My options are a 34 or 34-87. Which would be correct? I do not even begin to think the employees of advanced auto will be of any help tommorow.

I bought mine in the odyssey brand from a battery store like batteries plus or battery outfitters or something. We have two competing brands of that type of store nearby, and one wanted like $350 and the other wanted $209 which at the time was $10 cheaper than sears. If I had it to do over, I'd buy it from sears, because they come with a 100 month pro-rated warranty.

odyssey makes some of the best battery out there these days.

Especially their matt/dry cell batteries it amazing the power the can get out of them. I bought one for my jeep it was slightly large than a motorcycle battery yet it still had 800cca.

I installed the RR 150 amp alt and optima yellow top today. It might the easiest job I've ever done. Lol Well see about the Optima. If I have any issues I'll post back here. It has a 3 year warranty. The Yellow top was recommended for added power concerns such as lights or an upgraded audio system and I have both.

The difference between the 34-78 and 34 is the 34-78 is compatible with other group sizes and comes with different pieces to add. The spacer was included and worked great. It also has side mount cable capability. It was cheaper so that's the one I bought.

I bought it online with a coupon and saved $30 making it $175 plus tax. I picked it up at the store after the online order.

Thanks again for the 150 amp alt. idea.

If you have a pal with a clamp on DC amp meter, you can see what the alternator is putting out with various loads turned on. Did that on my stock D1 and with everything on the amps were 85, with 5 or less going to the battery.

To clear up the old Optima BS, Gates Rubber was the original designer/builder of those batteries for the military years ago, when they went out of business they landed up being built per the same spec in the Mexico plant.
My last 2 last a bout 7 years with a lot of hard use and their replacements are more of the same, Yellow Tops.
