Default Honest opinion - Disco II or Range Rover Sport, 1st offtroad event..

I was pretty psyched to discover a LR offroad event fairly close to me at the end of March - I've never been on one before and my GF and I are ready to go out camping or something, and being a 2-3 day event we can bring the dog, go camping, etc.. they also have a shooting range which would be nice. There's 12 people going so far I believe - The Cove in Nrn VA. - THREAD.

It's supposed to be light trails and I was told most of the vehicles are daily drivers.. but I don't know what I should take.

Neither are really ideal at the moment.

The Disco is my #1 choice hands-down, for starters I don't want to take the RR when there's 12 discos lol - but also, I just finished the entire front core/frame / inner fender/hood rebuild w/ faeclift headlights & front end following a crash (2 year project so far) and while I've got 1200 miles on it since I got her back on the road, I STILL don't have a front bumper on it - the cheapest I've found is 7-800 and while I'm going to pull the trigger soon, I don't think I have enough time to buy it, ship it, PAINT it, install it, and get the washer system and fog lights hooked up etc in one weekend. It's also bone-stock, 166k miles..

The RRS on the other hand, is for sale.. since I'm trying to buy an 06-07 LR3 (I'll still keep the Disco). I don't want to put anything at risk when the vehicle is up for sale, plus it's probably a 400 mile trip so the mileage will increase. It will need an oil change (8+ qts and genuine LR filter since that's all you can get for them) which sucks when it's just gonna leave in a couple weeks anyways. Biggest issue is the fact that the RRS has 22" stormers on it .

Neither situation is ideal, however I found some nice 16" Disco wheels with new General Grabber AT2s for ~$500. I think I'm going to put those 16s on my Disco and put the current Disco wheels (actually 06 RR 19"s w/ the OE Michelins) on the RRS.

Spec-wise the RRS should be better, but my Disco has been totally unstoppable this winter since getting it back on the road... over a foot of snow and it just plows through it, towing a 1600lb round bale to the horses through 6" of mud and it didn't even hesitate.. also bringing loads of gravel around the yard. I have a lot of faith in it these past couple weeks, in spite of it being 15 years old now.

The RRS has about .8" more ground clearance in off-road mode, and no large diff housings hanging down, in off-road extend mode it's got almost 4" more ground clearance than the disco, and about 8" more wading depth. In the event of night/evening runs the RRS 55w adaptive xenons are light years ahead of my DII (which also has no fogs since the bumper is off).

I'm leaning towards the RRS - at least I can say I took her off-roading once before I sell it. I'll just cover up all the seats for the dog and detail it afterwards I guess. Then I'll have all summer to work on the Disco AND it will have those 16s with the new General Grabbers on it. I can sell the RRS and throw a lift and the front bumper on it - next chapter will be in the Disco?

What do you all think?

Pics from the past few weeks...

Bring whichever can take more damage(the D2).

The Cove is no playground. There are several dozen trails that you can drive without issue, but the fun stuff CAN cause damage.

That being said, I didn't damage anything while there.

THAT BEING SAID, my truck is not really close to stock clearance.

Well that's the tough part - in the current configuration the range rover sport should be more capable off-road, however yeah.. don't really want to put a scratch on it. Then again I really baby them about equally.

Hah funny!

Well look at it this way, I'm sure there will be a few stock DIIs in the mix, and it'll definitely be fine tagging along with those - worst case I just sit out anything I don't like the looks of.

The only problem with the disco is no bumper. It's looking kinda ghetto fab atm. I want to have photos to remember the weekend of, and a half naked DII isn't very glamorous haha.

Don't risk the vehicle you intend to sell. That would not be a good idea. You would be sick if you damaged it. If this is your first off road experience, the chances that you might damage something are much greater...

Suck it up and swallow your pride a bit and take the disco without the bumper... No one there will care and you can talk about the work in progress that you've been going through. It would be a good conversation starter.

That, or don't go to this event. Wait until you have an LR3 or until you have the Disco ready for prime time...

I have both as well, a 2008 RRS diesel and a D2 TD5 diesel, of course there's the Smarty or the Pajero but they won't want them at an LR shindig. For me it's a no brainer, the RRS is the clean, smart motor whereas the D2 is the 'do it all' truck so for me it would be the D2 as I seriously wouldn't want to damage the RRS and particularly in your case where you're selling it. Take the D2 and have some fun.

Bring the Disco, you will be fine, We are not going out trying to kill our motors. I cannot gaurentee that you might not get some brush scratches so if you are looking to sell the RRS then leave it at home and bring the Disco.

There will be winch motors going and both Pat and myself have lots of experiance off roading and recovery and saftey is always paramount in all things we do.

This is not even a choice. Take the D2. Your sport has 22in rims.
