If you are dead set on getting a DII then get a '99.

Between that and your 2002 what is the big difference?

the 99, like mine, has CDL on the TC. So if you choose to take it off road you can engage it with a 10mm open end wrench or install a D1 cdl linkage or an electric solenoid. Unlike the 03 and 04 it has the 4.0 instead of the 4.6.

Mine's an '02 and I like it just fine. No option for CDL without swapping the TC, but I haven't been in a situation....YET....where I have needed it yet.

If you don't plan on much serious off-roading, you'd be just fine in an '02 IMO.

Being I live in NJ (even though rural) I don't see myself getting 3 feet into the mud. I would love to do some off road trips, but nothing where I would find myself using an 10mm open ended wrench. I like to play in the snow and dirt, but I think any Disco would do the job.
I have a full size SUV now for the family and an AWD fun car with snow tires for messing around in the winter. I want an extra car to use for the activities I am tired of getting the daily cars all dirty with.

Without a lockable center diff, a disco is not very good offroad. Sure the traction control is supposed to make a CDL redundant but once those amigos are on and you lose your ABS then your Land Rover is about as capable as my corolla in the snow or mud.

Why a 99? Whats wrong with 2000? It has the CDL on the TC as well.

That's taking it little far, don't you think? I know you're just making a point, but come on now............BUT, I guess it would also depend on your definition of "off-road".

Rob i would highly suggest a 99 or 00. If you do enjoy an off-road trip with our club and want to do it again you will be kicking yourself for not getting a rig with CDL without a TC swap.

OK... so what you are saying is that IF the ABS fails, it is useless in the snow/mud. BUT, if the ABS does not fail, it is fine off road, right?
