Hood LAND ROVER Letters Removal?
Well today is the day for paint shop dropoff. Hood and Roof will be painted Satin Black. The peeling clearcoat just bothered me way too much. Here is how I removed the decals on the hood. Dental Floss was way too hard on my fingers, decided to use my plastic putty knife. Worked like a charm after heating with my Harbor Freight Heat Gun.
Let me get this straight. You want to remove the LR hood lettering and potentially render them unusable just so you can paint underneath the lettering than refit the lettering? Does it really matter if anyone sees the old paint underneath the lettering?
Painters tape is very cheap, easy to find and easy to apply and remove. Use the tape and s cutting tool to carefully trace it around the lettering and you should be set and won't have to remove the lettering.

Now put the LR insignia back PDQ otherwise you may turn into a pumpkin

(I have a similar problem on a 2003 facelift, the clearcote is peeling off the front color coded quarter bumpers due to stone chips and sun. Also the clearcote has peeled off the hood and roof of my Pajero due to the heat and sun)

Love the semi gloss sheen.
Without removing the letters the finish would never have been as good. All kinds of drips and problems with the paint and the painters tape would have happened.
A much better result all round. And no pain in the *** of masking the letters.
Great job.

2) If you look at the "whole" hood the top is peeling the clear, hence why the whole hood got painted to include where the letters used to be.
3) Knowing that they we're decals after the first helpful reply, there is no way in hell I would put painters tape to save them.
4) I am glad I did remove them prior to having it painted and will probably leave it off and not replace it. Having the front saying Land Rover twice is kind of ridiculous. The grill emblem already says it. It would have made more sense for the hood lettering to say DISCOVERY II in my opinion.

The clean look is actually growing on me

Myself I would rather spend the time using some tape than putting out the heat gun and something to prior off the lettering, than Hassel with trying to refit them exactly as they were (which would be most difficult if you paint over the area). But to each his own. I do agree that Discovery on the hood would be cool though I never had a issue with the Land Rover lettering. On a final note if our as OCD as I am than I'd would just buy new lettering to fit after out painted the truck or hood or whatever because it would compliment the new paint job.
