I think this test must be performed with main fan removed. Careful, please.

I'll be sure to take caution.
Thanks for the heads up.

Alright, I started the engine and let it idle until it started knocking.
I then shut the motor off, removed the serpentine belt, and started the engine.
To my surprise, there was no knocking! Not even a minor click. It ran for about 2 minutes with no noise.

I shut her down, and started manually spinning all the pulley's to check for noise.
The power steering pump had a very noticeable yet soft click when I spun it with my hand. So I put the belt back on, and started the engine. The clicking was there instantly.

Here's where it gets weird... And I think this is simply coincidence.
I haven't been driving the Rover in the fear that it was in the valve-train, but I wasn't too worried about it now that I've identified the noise is coming from the power steering pump. So, I hopped in the rig, and drove down to the Auto Parts store to pickup a bottle of Lucas Power Steering Additive. I do plan on replacing the pump, as the fluid is black and now it's clicking, but some Additive will help in the meantime. On the drive back, when the car shifted down and reached low RPM, the motor started to lurch. I immediately assumed misfires, due to it only happening in low RPM, and just the way it felt... Low and behold by Service Engine Soon light came on shortly there after. I pulled off the road, shut off the engine, and plugged in my OBD2 reader. It threw codes P0300 & P0304. Misfire, and Misfire on cylinder 4.

I've already purchased STI spark plug wires, and E3 48 Plugs, I just haven't gotten around to installing them. Hopefully that'll solve the misfire issues, I just hope to god It's only the Power Steering Pump, and the misfires aren't caused by something more serious.

You ran your truck for 2 minutes with no serpentine belt? that means there was no coolant flow, did you monitor your coolant temp?

I was just going to post this as well.

You ran the motor with nothing flowing through it and now it's throwing misfire codes.

I doubt it's a coincidence.

good job.

Order a new power steering pump.
Install it.

Yours is wasted.

Misfire on #4 is probably just a bad wire.
Start up the rover in dead of night and look for sparking from the wire
on #4.

#4 wire boot is probably cracked at the plug.

Running the truck with the belt off for 3 minutes did not waste the engine or overheat it.
There was coolant in it so your are ok.

Personally I would have run it only a minutes but you were beholding a miracle.
I know how that feels.

New Pump on the way, and I did the wires and plugs last night, I cannot believe how much power it has now!

You're exactly right! The plug end of the wire was destroyed on Cylinder 4.
Those STI wires are difficult to feel when they're properly seated in the coil, so I was a little unsure when I put everything back together to fire her up, but all 8 are running stronger than ever.

And yes, I was just assuming it was 2 or 3 minutes, obviously not long enough to cause any heat related problems. I pretty much consistently monitor my temps with my Bluetooth OBD2 adapter. Best $7 I ever spent.

Thanks for all the help chaps!
Without your advise, I probably would've had to end up paying some incompetent local mechanic to not properly diagnose the issue. In the meantime, I threw since Lucas Power steering treatment in there and its quieted the pump up until I can install the new one. Thanks again!
