Hey again folks, I've been waiting on a water pump and some other cooling system components and just received the water pump at my doorstep. Ordered from BPUtah but it looks like it was dropped pretty hard in transit judging by this dent around one of the bolt holes. Was hoping to do the repair this weekend but the dent is barely large enough to make me nervous.
Would you personally still install this pump? Would you return it? File the bur away? Thanks.
Looks like it is no longer a flat surface & if that's the case you should get a replacement. Second option would be to file it down flat, but since it was damaged in shipping I'd ask for a replacement.
Return it. That’s a sealing face and that burr will cause it not to sit flat. It’s probably easy enough to file down without too much trouble but why should you have to fix a brand new part?
It depends on how much you need it fixed, yes a replacement it the best option but if you want to get you car up and running then file it off, you can check the sealing face with a straight edge , in the past I have also used a very thin coating of engineers blue on a piece of glass, as its normally very true like a test table to check faces are good
I've used hundreds of parts like this, not eggagerating. Knock it down with a file and neither you nor your motor will ever know a difference. No need to waste the time or trouble getting a replacement.
If you're worried about it, use just a very thin wipe of grey RTV around the gasket on both sides. Just barely paint it on.
I would have a hard time being patient waiting for replacement, so check for hidden damage, make sure whole pump isn't warped, and file and sand that burr flat. Re-check damage area for absolute flatness after the re-work.
IDK, I'd get a new one and wait. It's not like the water pumps are hard to source, NLA or on backorder.
I've had annoying experiences trying to make damaged surfaces seal properly with gaskets. By annoying, I mean, they leak and I had to redo the job several times.
