Default How Difficult Is It To Replace The Rear Diff

Mine is shot. So says the dealer. I have tools and the garage. 2003 Disco 2.
Is this a part I need to buy new or can I salvage one.
Thanks

what exactly is broken? you'd be way better off taking it to a drive line shop as they will fix the broken part and not make you rebuild the entire truck a nut and bolt at a time @ 200% mark up

I agree, have a drive line shop check it out. It can probably be repaired for less than the cost of a salvaged one. You will know that it has been thoroughly gone over instead of buying one that could have problems right from the beginning.

Replacing a differential is not a terribly involved process if you are familiar with cars. To remove the differential, you will need to do several things. In order: Disconnect the drive shaft, drain the differential fluid, take the wheels, the calipers, the rotors, and the hubs off, pull the splines out, remove the bolts holding the differential to the axle, remove and replace the differential. Put things back together in reverse order. You can buy several good salvage differentials, best place is probably ebay. AB has a brand new front one listed at just under $1000. The Rave manual on the greenoval website should explain this in better detail with the assistance of diagrams and pictures. Have you ever replaced a differential before?

It would help, to some extent to know what the truck is doing wrong and what the dealer said is bad, and be specific.
As for a new 3rd. member, you can buy them pretty cheaply and the install is not hard.

The truck does no move under its own power and rolls freely in park. I was not driving it when it stopped working but was told that it had been making a "whirring" noise and would "klunk" when going into reverse for a week prior to failure.

and you are sure it is the diff and not the rotoflex or propshaft that failed?

As sure as I can be without taking it apart myself. It was diagnosed by a reputable dealer. I have tools and have solid experience working on cars and especially motorcycles. I just do not have any experience with differentials.

I pulled a used 3rd member for my D1 at the local junk yard for $65...took about an hour to install..but it will take a little longer on a DII since they don't have full floating axles.
