Default How do front cover relief valves work?

Hello,

Land Rover and Range Rover Picture by LandRoveris | 5221387 | LandRoverForums

I am in the middle of an engine overhaul on my 1999 D2. I have the front cover taken apart. I have removed the oil pump gears and the pressure valve (marked #1 in image link) which is visible under the gears.

Unfortunately I hear something still moving around in the cover like a ball bearing or a very freely moving piston. I can shake the cover and it would make a spray paint can type rattle. Is there another piston in area marked #2? If so, should it be sliding loosely? Should I inspect it for free movement?

I had a hell of a time getting the spring plug out from #1 so I don't want to remove this without reason.

Thanks!

Other than swapping out the pump gears I have not cross someone that has attempted to rebuild the oil pump relief system. I wasn't aware it was serviceable.

Hang tight. I'm sure few members will chime in with advice.

Saw this recently.

There are two valves, one on either side of the oil pump. If something is rattling it has to be on of the pistons, which would mean a broken spring. Both of the valve setups look identical when you have them out, and neither should be moving around.

I took mine apart last week. It is a not a pleasant task.

My front cover was scored and is now junk so if you need some pictures let me know.
