I am changing the water pump and I can not get the fan off!!! I rented a tool that was supposed to help but the two wrenches it supplied were too large to grasp the shaft behind the clutch. What size is this shaft? If I can find this out I will run out and get a regular wrench. Getting the pump off with the fan installed seems impossible!!! I need help, I have 24hrs to get this done!!!!

 

Either leave the aux. belt on and put a wrench on the nut and hit the wrench with a stick or something. The resistance of the belt and the quick whack can loosen it. If that does not work then just take the water pump off with the viscous fan attached and then remove the fan on the work bench. Search around this forum I believe the big nut is 34 or 36mm. Some say a Ford clutch wrench at autozone will work.

 

I already have the belt off so I think I will go in search of a 34- 36 mm wrench. Any other tips I should know about on this job?

 

You have the Rave CD or the Shop Manual? If so you are set, if not then download it and follow the procedure and the torque values. Harbor freight will have a wrench for cheap if you don't have one, I don't own a metric that big. It may be 32mm also so don't quote me on the size I'm just going from memory here I got to my head gaskets without removing the fan.

 

I didn't have a wrench big enough either. I used a water pump plyer and it came right off, as soon as I figured out which way to turn it, and I don't remember which way at the moment. With the belts on it, it just takes a nice whack with a mallet against the wrench, or in my case pliers lol, and it loosens right up.

 

Well I put the belt back on and found the correct size wrench. I gave the wrench a couple of good whacks and everything moved, there is not enough tension on the belt to break the shaft loose. Any other ideas? Getting the pump off with the fan on does not look possible.

 

Its 32mm, I used a crecent wrench on mine.

 

Try to email StevenDiscoII he posted last week sometime that he got his off that way (with the fan connected). I assume if the bolts are blocked in front by the pulley you need to us a wobble extension or one of those long jointed ratchets. Spray some PB blaster on it too.

 

It can be done without removing the fan, at least on an 04

 

I just removed mine Monday nite, and on a D2 at least, the Ford fan removal tool is the way to go. A D2 IS NOT a 32mm. I bought a 32 and tried it, too small. Another tool that might work, and was gonna be my next option is a plumbers adjustable spud wrench. A spud wrench is essentially a very thin adjustable wrench. If your belt is properly installed, it should apply enough tension to at least get the fan loose. And remember, the most important thing here is RIGHTY LOOSEY, LEFTY TIGHTY. It's reversed from a normal nut and bolt.
