Default How do I test a Front Fog Light Switch

2003 D2. Purchased the truck 1 month ago with the front fog lights not working. The bulbs look good. When I push the switch on the dash, there's no indicator light (like there is on the rear fog light which work fine). The fuse is good. Connection is good on the back of the switch. Is there a way to bypass the switch with a jumper wire?

there should be a relay somewhere, these days they don't run power to the switches, the run it to a relay and the switch makes or breaks the relay.

First, check fuse F3 (15A) in the engine compartment fuse box.

If that's OK, check the relay R12, also in the engine comapartment fuse box.

The front fog lamps switch switches a signal wire from the Body Control Unit (BCU) on switch pin 1, to earth on switch pin 4.

This momentary signal to earth, instructs the BCU to switch on the front fog lamps relay - but, only if certain other conditions are met.

Using an appropriate diagnostic tool, the BCU is programmable with the following front fog lamps options -

  • The vehicle is not fitted with front fog lamps
  • The front fog lamps will operate if the headlamps are on main beam
  • The front fog lamps will not operate if the headlamps are on main beam

Paul, Which Relay is R12? My books don't show relays numbers like it shows fuse numbers.

Thanks. I have a feeling the relay is the culprit. I will check it tonight.

Interesting. I didn't know you can adjust how the fog lamps work. What would be needed to modify/change the fog lamps to operate to work even if the headlamps are not on main beam?

Apart from switching them off completely, the only BCU adjustment is whether they will stay illuminated, or switch off with main-beam.

They will always require side-lights or dipped-beam to be on, before the BCU will switch them on.

There's no way around that - unless, you change the switch for a latching type, and wire the BCU out of the circuit.
