Yep that's how you do it, but sometimes you have to make sure you're directing all the hit with a sledge in the direction to loosen it vs in a downward motion.

Got it. Put some PB on it and let it sit. Finally came off.

So question putting in the pump. Put gasket in the hole first then insert the pump, or put gasket on pump then insert the whole assembly

It's a simple 1 hour job and well described in RAVE.

Take your pick of these vids.

Long time ago, I tried to change a pump. I used a chisel instead of a screwdriver and hit that sucker. I shaved off two of the flanges before I got a flatter tool and got it out.

Many have done this exact error before you many times. Soak the ring for 24 hours in penetrating oil and then use a large very BLUNT cold chisel or even the special tool to remove the ring. Use copper grease to install the new ring and also a new gasket. Don't over tighten the ring as it's not necessary, the gasket does the work, follow the RAVE torque recommendation.

Default Ring.....$%@&!!!

I gave up on getting mine back on. Mangled it getting it off and could not get it on correctly. I have a tennis ball under the metal access lid keeping tension on till I can find a better solution. I feel your pain. The retention ring is a piece of crap.

I needed an extra set of hands.
I put one foot and all my weight on it, while my friend tapped the ring into place.
Hardest fuel pump lock ring I've ever seen.
