How long before major engine trouble (typically)?
like Dave I say. drive it .have fun. if something breaks, fix it. if you don't want to fix it, get another or get something else.

My disco is my daily driver, my work truck, my weekend toy and my dog hauler. I have 138k miles on it and drive it everywhere.
Key is keep good oil in it, catch the leaks early, and don't let it overheat(it won't if everything works properly)
I beat my truck so I've rebuilt both axles, did the hg(I bought it and they were leaking and I ignored it for a year) , rebuild both driveshafts, the entire braking system, bent the frame, suspension etc.
They're fun and reliable cars if you keep an eye out for the little defects here and there.
