Default How long to change a water pump

I think my WP is going so 2 questions how long to change, and do you need any rtv along with the gasket.

Look likes it is weeping, not 100% until I do a dye test next week

If nothing goes wrong - 2-4 hrs depending on your ability and power tools availability. Nothing should go wrong, just saying. I always use RTV for a leak proof seal, both sides of the gasket, finger snug, cure 24hrs, torque. RTV the bolt threads too, two of them penetrate the water jacket. Check the idler pulleys or get spares if they have never been done, ideal time to do them.

What EXTINCT said...unless you're like me and spent hours scraping off old gasket material. That took longer than just replacing the water pump.

Yep cleaning the timing cover = longest part of the job IMHO.

Brian is a man of few words in this instance, but when it was my turn last year to replace the water pump, keninnc turned me on to the Roloc bristle discs to clean up the front cover. What a Godsend. Except I used the 120 grit white/gray version instead of the 80 grit yellow discs Brian shows.

@mln01 @The Deputy I have a set of the white ones. The damm thing is just starting to fail, no wobble but a bit stuff out the weep hole, only when about 196f+ as far as I can tell. A bit of moisture around the weep hole, looked oil it was just existing grime

Just before a 3 day trip with my Rover group the gasket arriving the Thursday before with luck.

Roloc and the angled grinder are worth every penny vs scraping off the old gasket.

With the D2 you angle grinder works best since there is not much room between the engine and radiator.

Don't forget to get the adaptor pad to connect the Roloc onto the grinder.

Wish I saw this before I did my pump and spent 2 hours cleaning the old gasket off.

So to make sure I understand you. . . coat both sides of the gasket with RTV stick the gasket to the pump and then bolt it on finger tight to cure overnight? Then torque to spec in the morning? Do you have a gasket preference for the RTV-Gasket-RTV sandwich? I just ordered the FlowKooler pump referenced in another recent post if it matters.
