Question How much is my engine worth approximately

Guys I found this awesome LR mechanic in Ohio. I just did an engine swap as I has a valve cover leak and I let the oil get too low. The LR mechanic is interested in my old engine as he rebuilds them and I was wondering what is an approximate fair price for it. It is a 2003 LR Discovery II with 115K on it. It was serviced regularly by the dealership until about a year and a half ago so for the most part it is in pretty good nick. Thanks guys for any input.

Why would you let your engine leak oil, and the smell of burned oil is very noticable? I would suggest you start maintaining your Disco like most all of us do and check your fluid levels once a month, along with tightening 4 bolts at every oil change would have saved you $thousand.

Thanks for the tip on tightening the bolts. I will make sure I figure out how to do that. Yes I do agree that i made a mistake but I am single mom who does not know much about cars and I am trying to learn. Your information has helped me a lot.

Just an FYI the dealership maintained my truck up until about a year and a half ago when I got laid off and so I am only just learning what it takes to maintain it. This is why I joined so that I can teach myself.

Said we will talk when I come in to do some repairs on my truck so nothing yet but since I am a novice I wanted to know what a reasonable offer is. Right now I have no clue.

Depends on the condition of the stuff. Well known and trusted people get about $500 for a 4.6L crankshaft, rods, and pistons for people wanting to turn their 4.0 into a 4.6L. But everything would probably have to be usable. Since you are not in the business of selling parts, I wouldn't expect to get that much. Perhaps for the complete engine, with block, heads, and everything, if you can get close to that, you'd be doing really well.

A good, well-running 4.0 will sell for close to $2000 in used condition. (again, from the trusted re-sellers, who will stand behind their parts)

If it were me... I'd keep the engine, and buy a harbor freight engine stand and rebuild it slowly in my garage. I'd rather have a nice core that just has a little rod knock or lifter noise than a boat anchor that I or someone else overheated.
