Default how to pay

how much should I pay for a 2004 land rover with 100,000 miles. Runs and drives, but needs head gasket and brakes.

I have picked up 2 in that condition. The most I paid was $600.

the body and interior are in pristine condition. No dents or dings or paint fading on the body. No rust. 5 passenger not the 7 passenger. Leather is in mint condition. leaking oil and check engine light on. Misfire in cylinder 7.

I have found that the part of the country you are in makes a huge difference. I see prices on the coast that are insane. For example here is an ad I saw in Dallas. Looks and runs great but needs a battery. $800

Good year and mileage but point out all the faults and get it as cheap as possible. If you can turn wrenches and know what you are doing all the better but don't tell the vendor but get an estimate of costs from a workshop and deduct the costs for the work. So if it's say $4K and the work is say $2K then offer them £2K and make it clear you are taking a risk nothing else is wrong. At 100K miles you'll probably need a new front cardan driveshaft which will set you back another approx $400 plus fitting.

Don't pay more than $1000 for a good looking disco with a known engine issue. If you buy it, disassemble the top end and go from there. If it's just a head gasket, fix it and move on.

Both, it would be foolish to only do one side. If the one blew, because of age...then what's stopping the other side from letting loose soon?
