Default How to tell if a battery is on its way out?

At the dealership they told me my battery is probably going to die soon. The truck is 4 years old / 50K '03 D2 and it looks like this is the original battery. I wonder how I can tell whether they were actually right or not. Can I just measure the voltage on the battery and tell it based on this? With engine on or off? What should it be? The truck behaves normally and doesn't give any visual signs of dying battery - starts excellent, no problems driving.
What is a recommended brand of batteries for a Disco? I've heard of Optima Red Top as a good brand - any opinion here?

Go to an auto parts store and have it tested for free.
Yes Red tops are good batterys, I am running dual Yellow Tops because of my winch an the old Engle.

Just before my battery went bad, my M and S lights began blinking. Anyone else find the same thing ?
