Default How to tell if the power steering pump seal(s) are bad once pump is out?

2004 Discovery II SE7 (no ACE).

So I know for sure that my high pressure line is leaking and I suspect my reservoir t-to-pump hose my be leaking as well (visible fluid on the mesh part of the hose at the 180 degree bend, which I don't believe dripped down from the high pressure hose leak). I have the whole system out of the truck and I'm wondering if there's a way to test whether it is the reservoir-to-pump hose or one of the seals in the pump that is bad. I am waiting for a new reservoir-to-pump hose to come in the mail but the last thing I want is to put it all back together and find out the pump is leaking. I also don't want to buy a new pump if I don't need to. Thank you in advance for any help!

I dont know if there is a way once it it is all apart, but you have the hard part done. I would just spend the $100 on a new pump and not worry about it. age alone may be a killer.

Have you replaced the rear gasket? That is the normal leakage point. Replace the o-ring on the high pressure line, that is the leak point there. The low pressure line can be sealed to the pump using a layer of silicone. The front seal does not leak unless the front bearing is worn out. You can check to see if there is any wiggle in the front up, if it is at all detectable the bearing is worn out. The front bearing is sealed, not lubricated by the PS pump (stupid decision in my opinion on ZF's part but what do I know, I only have 30 years experience in mechanical engineering) so it does wear out. Usually takes about 200k to wear it out though.

After all the effort to pull the pump out, consider that if the seals are good, will go bad soon. So spend a bit for those cheap parts and replace for peace of future mind. If you are like me, that ought to know what/how/why failed; risk reinstalling as is and check leaks when works again.

Thanks for the input, everyone. Decided to just but a new pump while I have it all apart. Appreciate your insights!

Which pump did you go with? I have had a DOA new pump and now a rebuild that leaks after 6 months, getting frustrated with the same repair over and over!

do you just put the silicone (or RTV? Gasket maker? is there a specific product you like?) on the threads or where the pipe flares out?

No silicone that hose, that is the high pressure hose. Put silicone on the nipple on the bottom of the pump, slide the hose on, let it cure 24 hrs before you put the hose clamp on.

ah okay so the big hose. That makes way more sense. I’ll do that the day before I install
