Huge drop in Gas Milage. Possible Vacuum pump problem
Ive got a 2003 SE and randomly for about a year when I start the car there is a loud humm coming from the engine. It usually went away within seconds but has recently been humming a lot longer. Ive also noticed that sometimes when I step on the gas from a stop, the engine hesitates and the check engine light comes on.
Currently I am averaging around 230 miles per tank of gas (HWY miles). While talking to a friend who owns the same year rover as I do, he said he gets close to 400 on a tank.
My dad says it could be a bad vacuum which is making it run rich. It seems like this could be something I could fix and would like some suggestions on what to check out.
Any suggestions would be great. Sorry if there isnt enough information. The engine was replaced at 32k via land rover because of a tech update. I had the head gaskets replaced at 70k. I believe the spark plugs are fairly new.
Thanks, Nathan

We need to know what the codes are. Go to autozone and get them read an report back. I'm thinking wires, how old are the wires and what color are they?
The humming sound at startup is your SAI and normal.
Edit: Forgot to add that unless you have a diesel your engine does not have a vacuum pump it generates it's own vacuum.
