I got towed home today
I was driving today, normal operating temps, cold day, about 14 degrees F. I pulled into the left turn lane and stopped. Engine died, got the servic engine light and battery light. Tried to restart and it cranked real well, but never turned over. I'm starting to think its the CPS. I get towed home and put it in the driveway. I am really busy with a lot going on so I can't stop and read the codes right then. I go out two hours later and turn it over. It starts right up. So far the symptoms look like a bad CPS. I still haven't put the code reader on it, but the service engine light is out. I hope Advance has one. It will still be bone chilling cold tomorrow. Does anyone know where to find the picture of the hole cut in the wheel well for access? Any tips from anyone who's done one recently? I don't want to have to take down the y-pipe.
Fuel pumps have been known to act like that. I had one on a different car that stumped some good mechanics for a while too. I wouldn't run out and replace the pump but if this doesn't get resolved w/ cps keep it in mind.
I just spent a couple of hours using the search function trying to find the photograph of the cut in the wheel well to access the CPS and couldn't find it. If anyone knows what thread it is in, please let me know. Thanks.
Fuel pump relay looks much like CKS.
Swap the fuel pump relay with the wiper relay next to it and see if it cranks.
You might get lucky.
Yeah, for the record my experience has been:
Fuel Pump relay - won't start when cold
Coils - misfire when warmed up or under heavy throttle
CKP - I haven't had this problem, but what I have read is won't start when it's warm. I think dying when it's running is a less common symptom, but it does happen sometimes.
So IMO it probly is the CKP. But checking the fuel pump relay is free and takes seconds, and it may save you money, time, and frustration.
Like I said, that relay should be the first thing people check, but in this case I bet it's the CKP.
