I just bought a 1998 disco and have a few ??'s
Well to begin we just bought our second LR the first one we owned was a 2000 LR Disco and we loved it but we were forced to sell it when our son broke the a/c and it was way out of our price range to repair. We just bought a 1998 LR Disco earlier today we are so excited! We all when out for a little test drive we had the air going as it was hot outside...when we returned home the hood was really hot when we went to open the hood we could barely touch it, the thermostat is below the half way point it just seems to be the motor area. Also the a/c button in the front dash and in the rear power for the back does not click so I'm guessing the rear air doesn't work. If anyone out there has any suggestions that would be great! Thanks
Well the all aluminum engines on these trucks put out alot of heat and if the insulation that is supposed to line your hood is gone then it will get really hot.

How did your son break the a/c in your "old" LR?

You sold a newer truck that had a broken ac unit (did it just need a freon recharge?). And you bought a older D1 that will probably have more problems and end up costing more, unless your a big DIY guy... I dont understand your logic there.

Theres rear air in D1's? my d2 just has some wimpy floor vents.

Our hood liner is still tact there is just one piece of the corner that has the fluffy stuff exposed which concerns me with how hot the engine is getting, in the old LR we owned a few years ago my son was messing with the rear a/c button then the whole unit went out, when I took it to get looked at they charged me 200 dollars to tell me I needed a whole new unit and that it would cost me 1500. I don't think we thought we would own another LR but I just love the way they drive and the roominess they have. So any other ideas on the heat issue?

Sorry about your luck but you could have fixed it for under $300.
But back to your question, you will LOVE the DI, it is actually less problem prone than a DII.
Like lipadj46 said rent or buy a OBDII scanner that reads live data and plug it in, drive around and see what the engine temp actually is, my hood gets hot enough to fry eggs on but the engine runs right at 200-210*F when driving in the city or off roading.
Even after hours of offroading in 95*F weather with the a/c cranking away she never gets hotter than 215*F.
Remeber that aluminum dissipates heat really well.
