I realize this is the Disco II forum, although I'm asking about an L320...

Quick question - I got a nice 2013 LRRR Sport recently and it came with a working factory key (that I've refurbished with OEM parts) and a non-working Chinese knockoff key. I also bought a mint condition original used key on eBay from a 2015 (somebody sold their Land Rover and found the key years later in a drawer).

I have the LAUNCH X431 Elite new in box ready to go, but can't find any definitive info on whether or not it can program used keys. I could care less about the Chinese FOB, I'm just trying to get a second original OEM FOB running without screwing up the only working key I have for the truck.

Any info is appreciated. Happy to post follow ups if successful. Thanks-

***Update: manufacturer of X431 says I'm unable to do what I'm trying to do. Farking hell. 😞

Thanks for posting the info on Ace Hardware and having keys made! Just got my beloved Disco back after 2 1/2 years at the body shop and have this on my list of items to do. Appreciate it!!

the SLABS plip was a special fob that raised and lowered the back of the truck if you had air suspension, ostensibly for loading as you were walking up to the truck.

Jut because I think it would be cool, anyone know where to get a PLIP fob? You guys all know how much I love the bags in the rear…

Plip = fob. They're synonyms.
As said, there's a special type of plip/fob that has an extra button for deflating the rear. The coding process implies that there can only be one per vehicle.

Yeah I know there is a “special” one for the rear as you can see it in use in a couple of the LR videos (those dorky ones from back in the day as a video owner’s manual, that I really like). I didn’t think it was actually on the main key, though. I was saying sourcing one would be cool to do.

EDIT: As is perpetually the case with the D2, a scoshe of google fu and you get this: https://www.google.fr/search?q=STC50...RgcJaCGbVHh6M:

I just bought the Launch CReader Elite X431 and have the same issue. 2016 LR4. It verifies keys, apparently recovers keys but I can't figure out how to program new keys. SOL I guess.

The GAP IID tool can program keys and a lot of other stuff for the newer Rovers, I just programmed a fob on my 2014 LR4. Its not cheap but it is one of the best scantools/programmers for the newer Rovers.

I picked up the Launch Elite scanner a few weeks ago. I was able to program a new key using the videos above. Kind of clunky, but it works. I had more problem getting the key cut than programming it. Local it to the oldest locksmith company in the area - took 30 minutes and a bunch of cheap blanks to finally get a key to work. I'm glad he did practice keys before cutting the fob key

Looking around it seems that the nanocom evolution was a good fit, but for 500ish bucks, that did not quite fit my budget. I was looking at alternatives and I found this Launch tool(2023 Elite Launch Tool). It does a lot of other stuff too. I decided to take a chance and bought some keys and the tool. When I bought it there was a 60$ coupon.

I was eventually able to get it to work. I made some videos to post if anyone wants them, because there are no instructions. Or none that I found.

now that I know how to do it I could do it in 5 minutes. Quick Start from memory:
  1. Power the unit near a Wi-Fi . I had Wi-Fi next to my car. It came with a USB charger. I did not see the port, but I didn’t look for it either. I used the ODB2 to power
  2. there’s some updates and downloads. Specifically it prompted to update an app for Land Rover and Jaguar.
  3. once that was done go to diagnose.
  4. there is an Auto detect, and a manual detect
  5. manual detect is faster and I found I still had to make choices.
  6. Discovery -> Series 2 -> Body Control - > Security -> Vehicle Maintenance -> Plip programming
  7. follow steps as directed.
  8. when it asks about 18 digit barcode say No to get the 6 digit barcode.
  9. The steps are Test Program and Test then synchronize

Some notes:
  • could possibly mess something up. I had 5 plip codes stored at first, but by the end I only had 4. I think because I did not follow the prompts exactly. But the 3 I was programming were there.
  • I still don’t know what a SLABs plip is. It asked if I was programming one. I said no. Any help here from the community?
  • I did not know that plip = key fob until this process.
  • the keys sent from Amazon had 2 barcodes on it. The top barcode / string had the 6 character code in it. The 6 character code starts after the N. The number repeats except is reduced by one. The number is also hexadecimal
    • ex: N123456123455FF the 6 character code would be 123456
    • ex: N12345012344FFF the 6 character code would be 123450
  • To get it to synchronize you do the test and say No when you asked it to work. Otherwise it would be programmed but not synchronized and the key wouldn’t work.
  • if you mess up you can start over.

This is phenomenal dude. It worked!! Thank you for sharing!!! After loosing my fobs in the ocean two years ago I had, like a plebian, been relegated to using the physical keys inserted into my driver side door. This was probably the most triumphant LR moment I've ever had lmao.

Some of your links are outdated now -- I've linked updates to same/similar products below :

< video instructions (you posted two, the second one, which is the one I've linked here, was the most relevant.
https://a.co/d/20kxifi < the holy instrument. Make sure to check the $60 coupon
https://a.co/d/hL2yk4F < keys I ordered that worked. I've ordered different cheap ****ty keys from eBay and spectacularly failed at a similar attempt a couple years ago but with a nanocom. Your mileage may vary.
