Default I need an engine!

Well, my 03 engine tick has been confirmed and will need an engine now. One shop thinks its a slipped liner, the 2nd shop confirms the noise is from the block, not sure where but definitely from the block. I am waiting for an estimate from Turner engineering in the UK, and also an estimate from 1800engines (sp)? I would like to hear other suggestions from other folks that had their engine rebuilt or replaced. Used is out of the question for me, but would consider a 4.6 from a Range Rover with SAI if that works? The 4.6 out of the Range Rovers don't have the issues the 03/04 had. Thanks.

I have a RR 4.6 short block in my 2003, it's the same engine. It still ticks btw, all LR engines tick. A slipped liner does not tick, it sounds like a jack hammer.

My 01 and 03 both have the "Tick" sound. If, you have not changed your front cover/ oil pump. Make certain that it's not the tick sound... My 03 had a fairly loud tick sound moments prior to the oil pump shattering apart in the driveway under heavy r.p.m.'s... I got very lucky

My tick sound now sounds like marbles are in the motor. Turner Engineering got back to me today with a quote for a short block -$4388.00 shipped, by the time you add the front cover and gaskets, seals, etc it will be around $5k for the motor. I would consider used if I can lower the motor to say $2500 and get a 1 yr parts and labor warranty. I am looking at a $2-2500 difference. Both indy shops including my own guys confirmed it is not the oil pump making noise. What do you guys think?

http://www.roverlandparts.com/2003-2...57k-miles.aspx

it says out of stock but i would call them. if i were you i can't see dropping a $4k engine in there... I only paid $3k for my truck and i bought a second d2 for $1k. for $4k i would buy a D1 for $2k and put $2k worth of parts and maitenance into it and never look back at a problem again. OR i would spend $3k more and import a defender.

You would be lucky to get anything from rover land, they go very quickly and there are a list of preferred customers that get first dibbs.
AB lists short blocks for $4500 and I heard DAP and bputah had them for less, if you are considering new blocks then shop around at the US suppliers as well.
There are used motors going for less than $2K, I know of 2 for about $1000. It's a gamble though and it all depends on what your plans are with the truck. If you plan on keeping it for 10 years then putting $5K into it is not bad IMO.

Dude, at $5k for a gas engine, I'd consider swapping that baby to a TD5 if you can find one on ebay.

You are looking at $15K for a TD5 swap once everything is done.
Look at this thread:
http://www.discoweb.org/forums/showthread.php?t=72905

The engine swapped in is the successor to the disco diesel engine.

Default '03 DII Tick-Tick-Tick-Tick-Tick

'03 Disco II with 101000 miles. Has been Ticking for a couple of years. Had the head gaskets replaced a few months ago for oil leaks. Local Rover club uses a highly recommended local independent Land Rover shop - they say all appears well with the heads.

Engine is quiet when cold, but Tick begins when warm. Tick either seems to be top dead center, or centered below - hard to tell with all the engine noise and the way sound can be conveyed around. The Tick has been getting louder recently. Switched to Rotella T 15w40 yesterday and the Tick got quieter, but not gone.

By the way - I'm in the danger zone for VINs. Have had the Rover since 28K and it's been well cared for. Hoping the oil pump would have destroyed itself by now if that was the problem.

Any ideas?
