Engine is quiet when cold, but Tick begins when warm. Tick either seems to be top dead center, or centered below - hard to tell with all the engine noise and the way sound can be conveyed around. The Tick has been getting louder recently. Switched to Rotella T 15w40 yesterday and the Tick got quieter, but not gone.

By the way - I'm in the danger zone for VINs. Have had the Rover since 28K and it's been well cared for. Hoping the oil pump would have destroyed itself by now if that was the problem.

Any ideas?

Search for engine tick or knock, there are thousands of posts about it. It's normal, drive it until it breaks and then fix it.

I am waiting for an estimate from Turner engineering in the UK, and also an estimate from 1800engines (sp)? I would like to hear other suggestions from other folks that had their engine rebuilt or replaced. Used is out of the question for me, but would consider a 4.6 from a Range Rover with SAI if that works? The 4.6 out of the Range Rovers don't have the issues the 03/04 had. Thanks.
The P-38 RR's do NOT have SAI.
That was added to the DII to meet stricter emissions laws.

Thanks Spike, that was what I wanted to know. Thanks all for your comments. It does make sense to spend $5k for a truck that I would like to keep "forever", so far the wife is ok with taking a chance with an used motor, so far the best deal I could find on a 2004 motor with 75k is $2800. Very hard to persuade the boss about going new-unfortunately she is not a hardcore fan like we are here haha. We are planning to have a second baby this year, a sceduled cruise this April, other financial obligations, and on top of all that we still owe roughly $4k on this truck still..I am really leaning toward the used as well and take my chances, $2200 saved is money to put into offroad upgrades! I will keep you guys posted on my final decision.

Just a comment, you can use a short block from a 4.6 RR. They are identical to the disco short block. The only difference between SAI and non SAI engines are the heads, the SAI heads have those 2 ports added. I put a 4.6 RR short block in my disco. Good luck with your engine.

Hi Bundu,
did you just swap the 4.6 RR short block or rebuild it? I am thinking of swapping in a used 4.6 RR into my son's 2001 Disco II. Since they have the same engine management system I am wondering if the ECU compensates for the bigger displacement by monitoring performance/exhaust and adjusts the intake accordingly or does the ECU have to be swapped as well or reprogrammed? I am trying to find out as much as possible before I leap. I am pretty sure the block is bad (leaky sleeve), I am tearing it down soon to test/verify the leak. Thanks.

I rebuilt the engine. You can drop a 4.6 in a 2001, it will not even know the difference.
