Unhappy I need help

Hi, My name is Josh, & I just bought my wife & I our 1st LR. It is a 1999 Disco 1, I guess, & I drove it an hour and a half home. My father followed me stating that the brake lights didn't work but that I had tail lights when the lights were on. What can it be? I will check the under dash fuses tomorrow. There was a loud and pushy thud in the rear, like the rear end was being hit a time or two when I'd let off of the gas, & then put my foot back on the throttle. It wasn't a big issue till I paid for it and got on the interstate where it seemed to be having trouble staying in drive like it wanted to switch between 3rd & drive unless I gave it a bit of throttle at which point it would clear up, but it did this constantly. I need knowledge in the LR Disco world to diagnose. Diff problem? rear end issue? Also I have the 3 amigos, but I have an inclination that it is the shutter valve or the fact that when I looked under the hood some idiot had stuffed aluminum foil into the ABS fuse to keep the insides intact. HELP me please.

I just looked at the manual, & it is a Disco II.

I'd check the brake light switch. I think problems in that circuit can also cause the 3 amigos, or at least a couple of them.

I pulled the tail light, & the brake bulbs were blown. What do you think about the bucking sensation with the driving?

Check ATF fluid level. If that's good, guessing the trans control module.

Sounds like you don't have a whole stack of confidence in the previous owner, and what you seem to have bought.

So the first thing is to start learning just what 'have' you got. I'd start changing fluids, as they are a good indicator of the state of things.

As you have transmission issues. Change the transmission fluid. First check the level, to see if it's low. As that could cause issues you describe. After you've found the level. Change it. Look in the pan, is it full of bits of metal?

Etc etc.

You're going to have to get pretty intimate with this car. Are you handy?

There are few Disco specific things. Read the sticky at the top about a high mileage service. You might well be getting into most of that.
