Default Is this a I need a new block or head gaskets…

My thermostat ripped itself apart and overheated the engine. I just pulled off the heads and see this. Did I just blow the head gaskets or is the block junked? I should also say it looks like the coolant system was getting pressurized and blowing out the overflow tube.

To me at a glance everything appears ok with the block, the mating surface just needs cleaned up good before reassembly. Is there something in particular concerning you?

Given it is next to the coolant port I am going to say HG.

Now this, on the other hand, means you need a new block!

GREAT!!! Then I don’t need to pull the block. Just put it together with the new head gaskets.

@The Ocho @zuke At the very least the heads need to be checked for true, it is not really optional on aluminum heads.

Bought it and it’s sitting in my parts pile ready to go.

Currently the heads are being cleaned, having new valve seals installed and checked/milled true.
