Trust me...do not go cheap on the mass flow. Mine went bad and I bought the cheapes t one I could fine. Couldn't get the check engine light off and my truck ran ok for a bit then it **** the bed. Buy a Bosch because eventually you will anyway. Also very easy DIY.

is there any way of looking at the old one and seeing if that has gone bad, or is it just buy a new one a hope it takes care of the problem?

You can try to clean it. Buy electronics spray cleaner (CNC I think makes) from Autozone. However spray it only on a very cool engine and make 100% its dry before reinstall. It may work.

You can get the MAF readings with a ODBII scanner. It measures airflow gallons per minute. Cleaning a D2 MAF normally kills it.
You can unplug the MAF cable and the engine will run with default values. Do this when the engine is running badly and see if it makes any difference.

OK, so here are the CEL codes as they came up on the OBD:

There are 14 total

P0733- Gear 3 ratio incorrect
P1300- No Definition
P0303- cylinder 3 misfire
P0305- cylinder 5 misfire
P0171- Bank 1 Too Lean
P0174- Bank 2 Too Lean
P0301- cylinder 1 misfire
P0307- cylinder 7 misfire
P0300- Random Multple Misfire
P0301 again- cylinder 1 misfire
P0308- cylinder 8 misfire
P0303 again- cylinder 3 misfire
P0305 again- cylinder 5 misfire
and P0307 again- cylinder 7 misfire

I find it weird that cylinders 2 4 and 6 aren't misfiring. Any thoughts?

These codes point to a bad MAF:
P0733- Gear 3 ratio incorrect
P0171- Bank 1 Too Lean
P0174- Bank 2 Too Lean

The misfires can be bad plugs, wires, coils, sticking valves, injectors...
How old are your plugs and wires?
Do you know if the wires have been changed?
What gas are you using?

We bought the Rover in 07. I don't know when the wires were changed previously. We've only put 20k miles on the Disco in the 4yrs we've had it. I'm sure it could use a tune-up.

Do you have any idea why it only runs rough when the motor is cold?

I use Premium Unleaded gas.
