They were placed in the back for protection purposes which works quite well IMHO. OEM location still isn't an issue for me (you shouldn't be messing with them that often) and then having to hunt down specific length wires vs being in a pinch and using stuff from any auto parts store. SAI equipped D2's or P38's does make it have a few more steps to gain access to, but delete the SAI studs for bolts will help greatly.
