Default ???I think my transmission is going out????

I just bout a 2004 Discovery S 87,000 miles and it started to make a horrible noise today. When I put it into drive and accelerate it sounds like I am dragging something down the street under the truck. When I get up to 40 or 50mph the noise (roar) stops, If I slow and decelerate to 50 to 40 mph and below the noise comes back. The only way I can describe the noise is it sounds like a time when I rode in a friend’s truck and he had those HUGE mud grip tires.
I have read in some other post that this could possibly be caused by the transfer case and that by replacing the fluid could resolve the problem. Any help would be much appreciated. What you think?

1 Stop Driving the truck.
2 Replace your U-joints in the front driveshaft if they don't all have grease zerks.
3 Check all of your fluids in the diffs and transfer case.

I'm going to leave this one to Disco Mike, and better give him a call tomorrow. I'm going to take a guess something with the front U-Joints. He suggested that I need to get U-Joints on mine that have grease zerks, they are very common to fail. If you drop a driveline on the front you risk going through the tranny and that is expensive. Check some of the other posts and I would refrain from driving until you figure it out.

No, I have not talked to Mike yet. The earlier question / post when I asked about using the 4x4 was because of this noise that started. I have had the Disco for about 2 weeks and when I purchased it the 4x4 was set to HI, I just wanted to make sure that was the correct position that is should be in. I have never changed it out of HI or messed with the 4x4 settings. I think I have purchased a dud because I have had the following problems since I purchased the Disco:

1) My driver side window came off track.
2) Both of my rear break light hold water when it rains. I though it was just condensation but I took the break light off and there was at least 8 oz of water that poured out of them.
3) Front right park light went out.
4) Now I have a roaring lion under the turck.

And yes, I bought it as is. I am so worried at what will happed next. I guess I have been lucky and never had car problems in my life, of course I am only 28 so I guess it was bound to happen some time.

All pretty normal stuff for the Land Rover. I wouldn't sweat it too much. When I bought mine I spent every evening for a week reading up on the Discovery and learning the trouble spots. They're not Hondas and so they can't be expected to live a long life in neglect. Then again, Hondas aren't Land Rovers!

Cars like theseare a whole lot more reliable when you know what to keep your eye on and where to spend money on preventative maintenance, like having the front driveshaft rebuilt before it fails. By all means, take the time to read and learn. You'll come to understand and love your Land Rover too.

Derrick, I understand your pain, buying a vehicle then all of a sudden just things go wrong. The tail light issue is an easy fix removing the tail light assembly then removing the bulb mounting plat from the lense, and re-seating the gasket. It might now hurt to skim a coat of sealer, very thin though.

I'm going to go with my original thought on the U-Joints, but do make it a point to call Mike, he can answer the roaring lion under the truck probably the best.

Make surethe shifteris pushed to the right and you transfer case is not locked. Call Mike tomorrow. He can walk you through what to check.

You can check the flud in the transfer case yourself. There is a 1/2" drive plug on it. That is the fill plug. Take it out and there should be a little fluid running out. If not, stick your finger in the hole. If your can't feel fluid right at the top, you need to add some. Synthetic 90W gear oil.

There is a list that DiscoMike posted on here for a 60K service. I would suggest you find it and do everything on there. You don't know how that thing was taken care of before, so then you will know what has been done. Fluids are cheap compared to repairs.

Ever thought of returning the thing? Most places should help you out if something goes wrong within the first couple of weeks at least. Not only that, I think there is some sort of law somewhere that says something about selling a broken product while not informing the buyer said product is broken. I'm pretty sure of it.

Have you talked with the place you boughtthe lemonfrom yet? I hope your luck turns for the better...
