Default Ignition key revisited.

'03 Disco with confused owner....

I have one key that came with my Disco. I'd like to have another or, perhaps, even 2 spares.

I just called the Land Rover dealership and was told different stories by 2 different service staff members :

Staff 1: "You don't need anything but the blank. We sell them for $25-30 each."

I then called Atlantic British trying to find some cheaper blanks, they told me that I needed the blank plus needed to have it programmed and that they didn't carry them.

I then called LR once again. A second tech confirmed I, indeed, needed the blank and must have it programmed at a cost of $250 or so.

Trying to seek clarification, I did some research and called LR one more time to ensure that I didn't miscommunicate my needs. The first gentleman answered and resolutely said that I did not need the programming, but only the blank and that any locksmith can copy my original key without the need for programming.

All I want is a spare key that will lock/unlock and start my Disco. I don't need the remote open/lock function.

Can someone straighten me out, please?

I know that mine (a 2001 series 2) does NOT have a chip in the key so if I want a spare I just need to go to a locksmith. I got two blanks from ebay for 6 bucks but have yet to get them cut. I don't know if 2003 are the same but any key cutting place can test your original for a chip. The programming fee is usually for the key fob that locks and unlocks the doors. The fella I got my keys from even offered to cut them for me from a photo but my key was so worn down he couldn't. Most he can though. Absolute Lock and Key online! is his ebay store and his seller ebay is vizzpa. Hope this helps!

I had a locksmith make a copy. It works fine to lock/unlock
& engage the alarm (2001 Discovery)

*Posted for future reference for those who need to know*

After contacting a local locksmith, he stated that the following keys should work:

ILCO codes: X170, X239, and RV4
SILCA codes: NE38 and NE75EP

I've ordered some RV4-Ps from eBay and will report backafter they are cut.

Yeah the programming is for the remote. And $250 to program a remote, I will lock/unlock it with the key.

Are you saying those key codes will start and run the truck or just open the doors?

I thought the keys were chipped and would not start the truck without said chip being programmed for your vehicle (Either by Dealer or reputable service center, one here in MN does it for free).

I also have an 03 DII and also only have 1 key. I had a plain blank key cut at the local hardware store that will open the doors but will NOT start the truck. Won't even turn the ignition.

My dealership sells the remote door lock/chipped keys for something like $100 and I can get it programmed locally for free.

*Follow up*

I had three RV4-P keys cut today. The P stands for plastic.

One was a factory LR blank without electronics. I paid $14 with shipping from eBay.

Two were standard ILCO blanks that were $11 together after shipping.

They all unlock and lock the doors.

They each will start the Rover.
