I'm concidering on buying a 03~04 Discovery
Hi
I'm new, & noticed the knowage here is vast......I need your advice.
I'm concidering on buying a 2003 or 2004 Discovery.
I wil be taking it off-road (for real).
I've have read the other posts------------How common are these problems?
Any particular model I shoud focus on?
Are there any known things to look for / or watch out for?
What kind of gas mileage can I expect? (my guess is 13-15)
What are your general thoughts?
Am I looking at the "best" year?
Thanks
Nic

The Land Rover is heavily dependent on the owner doing two things. One-- is to maintain it "to the letter" with major's at 30K mile intervals. Try and cheat, and you are gonna get burned. and two--- you have to "look and listen" on a relatively frequent basis for any new leaks or noises that give you an indication that something is amiss. These vehicles are not like the Japanese, Swedish, or some German offerings that compete with the Land Rover in the light sport utility/luxury vehicle market. While Land Rovers out perform them all in a true off-road environment, the upkeep cost is much higher. Don't buy one without complete service records. Don't buy one with a salvage title. And don't buy one that came from any region with a recent history of floods.

TD5 expect about 30mpg. Diesel is best, worth getting it chipped + bigger intercooler, V8 performance, Diesel economy & reliability. Air suspension is very good as is ACE. takes the wallow out of on road driving. The off road performance is in a different class to the Jap or German offerings. Good luck, hope you get a good one.

I agree with Disco Mike on that. Don't get me wrong... I love my 2003 and I just got back from the North Carolina Outer Banks which are known for very deep and soft sand. I was concerned about not having the CDL, but with that situation my Disco performed flawlessly and drove over that sand better than any Jeep or Chevy Tahoe I've driven out there. I don't think I'll ever need CDL for the type of off-roading I'll be doing. That being said, I do wish I had known what Disco Mike just told you before I bought mine. I assumed they all had it.
