Default I'm losing my marbles here

Okay so I have 2002 Land Rover Discovery 2 with 186000+ miles on it, a month ago I had a head gasket done and I got it back with temps up to 221°F long story short and doing research I put back the heater hoses back on, I had bypassed them for some reason. Anyways last night I drove around for a some time and I noticed my temps were between 210°-212° F. That was definitely better than 221°F definitely not better but still. This morning I noticed the temps reach all the way up to 242° and I'm like WTF! As I was making my way back home the temps slowly dropped down back to 212°F. I love my Disco but damn I feel like I always come back with a hard attack from a short trip. Does anyone have any insight to what this could be??

Sounds like you've got air in the cooling system. Need to bleed the system and you will probably be good to go.

How are you checking the temp? Your temp reader could be off.
If you haven't done the inline mod do it. It's a far more efficient coolant flow and makes bleeding out air trivial as opposed to an exercise in frustration.

Maybe you have a bad thermostat. Those are pretty close to stock oem thermostat temperature

I had up to 220F+ with new head gaskets (done by PO). Replaced the thermostat (180F, genuine), fan clutch (whole assembly since I have an '04), radiator and did coolant flushes. All in that order but days in between steps. Every step brought the temps down a bit, now I am running at 180F, it goes up to 195F at idle while standing until the fan clutch kicks in. Bench test proved that old fan clutch was shot. Taking old radiator apart showed that lower channels were clogged.

I have an Ultragauge hooked up on my OBD2 but yeah everyone had mentioned that but I'm just not confident enough to do it.

Shouldn't be, I replaced all coolant parts last year except the radiator. That is 4 years old and it's a Nissens radiator.

Ima look into getting the black thermostat, getting a new fan clutch which I have warranty on from AutoZone and I'll try the coolant flushes. Thanks for the info.

black thermostat and Inline thermostat takes roughly the same amount of work, in the exact same spots on the vehicle, and the inline thermostat is so much better.
