Default I'm stumped

Disco 2 not getting fuel.
I recently had a strange symptom while in Mozambique and eventually had to tow the vehicle back to South Africa.
It's a TD 5 and started with the engine cutting out(I was driving on a very bad dirt road)the ref counter would drop to zero but almost immediately jump back to where it the refs was.Meaning the engine was cutting out and starting up again.
Eventually the engine died but when starting up it would start immediately and idle as normal.
It would continue driving a few minutes but would not ref over 2000rpm before shutting of again.
Start as normal and idle as normal...this behaviour continued for about 70km before it stopped and would not start again.
Very little fuel supply to diesel filter and none to fuel pressure regulator.
Fitted new high pressure fuel pump the simptoms are exactly the same
