Default Infamous Knocking Slipped Sleeve DII

I have a 2002 Discovery with 115000 miles. I bought the truck at 110,000 miles (therefore I don't know all the work performed lately) and now it has a very loud knocking noise. The knocking noise starts within 10 seconds of start up (at idle and drive) and will not go away. The knocking speeds up as I go faster. I did an oil change and there appears to be no coolant in the oil. Also it has not overheated. Do you think it is a slipped sleeve or oil pump going bad? Maybe a lot of sludge build up? I have read all the threads about slipped sleeve etc but I didn't know if a slipped sleeve would be knocking after cold startup. Thanks

Stop driving until resolved. The slipped sleeve tick is normally said to begin once engine is warm. You should rent/borrow a manual oil PSI test , remove the oil pressure sender, and record results, needs to be above 10 at idle.

I went and bought an engine oil pressure test kit and the PSI is at 50 at idle. That seems a little high considering most of these threads are saying if it is above 10 then its good. At 2000 rpm it is 54. Could it be the spark plugs, sludge in engine, head gasket, etc... Thanks

Wow 50 at idle is high with a possibly 115,000 old oil pump....

Sounds like your oil pump is have some issues itself. What is the oil pressure when the tick is noticeable and is it all the time or off and on?

Contact seller and ask some questions.

Then call your local dealer and ask them to do a vin search on it.
If that does not work get a hold of me and i will do it for you! What that will do is tell you where it was last serviced ( if at dealer) and get you records.

I forgot to mention that the exhaust fumes smell but it is not smoking if that would matter any.

Yeah the PSI seems way to high. The land rover starts to knock at start up. It starts as a knock then gets louder and will go in cycles with the noise. However the knock never does stop.

I'm assuming both those number were while it was cold, not hot. you should alway check hot and cold. Anyway where is the noise coming from the top or the bottom end? is it loader under the hood or under the truck?

Did you test oil pressure during a cold start and after running for 20-30min? Like Drowssap said cold idle PSI will be high. I start up at almost 60psi in the morning. After driving for a while I level out at 18PSI at idle.

Has your red oil pressure light ever come on?

What oil do you use? Might what to try 15w-40 rotella if you aren't already using it.

I use 10w/40 and it knocks louder above the hood. I tested it at cold start but it also knocks when its cold as well as hot. Again the knock is very loud. My neighbors probably hate me by now. The exhaust smells terrible too but it doesn't really smoke. The coolant level has stayed the same. I ran the codes again today and nothing popped up besides the three amigos which I will get to later once the knock is fixed. When I accelerate it sounds kinda like a winding up noise.
