insurance: comp/collision on a D2
Since all D2's are at least 13 years old, normal rules of thumb would say don't carry comp/coll, but it's a Disco so normal rules don't apply.
What does everyone do, and why? Are there any "tricks of the trade" in terms of best insurance to carry and how to describe the vehicle to the ins co. so that you get good coverage in the event that something bad happens?

If she's stock I'd get what's cheap and maybe a little coverage for the disco, but pretty much any collision will total her. If she's mint condition or heavily modified I'd look at special vehicle insurance such as what you'd get for a classic car or something, but probably still end up getting what's cheap and buying her back.

Thanks Alex, doing a buy back is something I don't know anything about.
Hopefully will never need to either, but I'm getting ready to spend a couple of thousand on some upgrades (new rear frame quarter section, lift/tires) and was thinking about this while paying bills the other night.

I've been thinking about this recently... with well over 10k and thousands of hours put into the rover... it would be nice to have it insured for something close to that. Special vehicle is the only way? I just filled out the Hagerty online quote and came back as "does not qualify"
I currently have geico for $350/6 months. No collision, $50 deductible comprehensive

You'll definitely get the option.
After those modifications you should talk to your insurance company about having the value of the parts added to your account. Things like the bumper, if undamaged, they will likely allow you to remove instead of paying you out for them. Things like a new frame section... Good luck even getting your value increased unless your frame was REALLY terrible.
Really you just need to talk to your insurance though.

I have USAA and though my D2 is pretty much stock, I keep full coverage on it because I don't want to come out of pocket to replace it if the worst happens. Also if I get in an accident I don't want to have to go through the hassle and expense of towing it myself. I'd rather just call up USAA and say "deal with it".
Once I start doing serious upgrades, USAA will allow me to put riders on the insurance for all the upgrades. So it's worth it to me.

I dropped collision a few years ago and kept comprehensive.
I was stunned two years ago when my son was rear-ended driving the DII and I was paid something like $3400 due to the fault of the other driver. I did not press the issue since things came out well for me, but all I can think is that the adjuster recognized the value of some of the add-ons, like the ARB bumper and the roof rack; otherwise I can't understand why it wasn't totaled. But whatever, I'm happy. And fortunate.
