Default Interested in Disco II

I am interested in getting a Disco II and have been researching information on this site for a couple of weeks now. There are 2 Discos close to me that I am looking at

2002 with 134000 miles, head gasket replaced at 95000 and power steeing pump also replaced. Owner has had it since 94000 miles and always used synthetic oil. However, he has not chnaged tranny fluid or tcase or diff fluids. It is cosmetically in great shape and appears to need nothing.

2003 with 114500 miles. Just had all fluids serviced inlcuding tcase and diffs. Transmission is new a short time agao, I am guessing that driveshaft took out the old one. Had 3 amigos repaired recently. Also in very nice cosmetic shape only thing it will need is tires soon.

2002 is listed at $4850
2003 is listed at $6500.

I am going to look at them this week. Which of these choices would be the better deal. I am capable of all of the maintenance that these vehicles need which is why I am not concerned with high mileage or maintenance intensive vehicles.

This vehicle will be a daily drive, tow a trailer from time to time and do some light offroading. I realize that neither of these have the CDL but I am not going to be doing a lot of heavy offroading so that should not be a problem.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

to restate the last post even though the price quoted seems good you can do better.

I strongly urge you to check three things
Check the drive shaft
Before you drive it check the coolant, after you drive it check it again you want no movement.
check the oil, make sure it is where it is suppose to be.

Fyi, I bought my 2003 Disco with 79K for $7,400. It also came with the factory bumper guard, lamp grilles and an aftermarket 7" head unit with rear cam and GPS. There are some good finds if you are patient.

In hindsight, I would love to get a 2004 because it comes with the Center Diff Lock (even for light off-roading as it get muddy out here in the Pacific NW. You never know when you may get stuck).

You mentioned some towing. A 2003 or 2004 comes with the 4.6L instead of the 4.0L engine. The 2003 and 2004 also has the upgraded projector headlamp design which I prefer.

Good luck on your search for a Disco!

Any Rover you buy will require head gaskets if they haven't been done. I have an '04 and the 4.6 is great but it isn't necessary. Plenty of people have put many miles on Rovers with the 4.0's.

Parts start to fail after 100,000 miles. I have 108,000 on mine (other than the motor) and I've recently replaced the radiator, hoses, idler pulleys, power steering pump, viscous fan, starter, and rear hub. That totals about $2,000 in parts. I need to do the headliner next which will be about $115 in materials. Just be sure you are prepared for what might be coming.

Looked at both of them today. It appears that my search continues. Neither one was in the shape that they were advertised to be. They drove ok but were obviously not well maintained so i will pass on these.

Thanks for you input

You sound sensible enough and have probably done the right thing. No vendor will ever tell you their car is a 'bag of nails' and many believe theirs is the best but have never compared it to a decent car - it depends on their standards. Don't rush into anything just take your time their need to sell is always greater than your need to buy - you've got the cash and they want your cash - there is no such thing as a bargain and a bargain is only worth buying if you really. really need it and also it's good and cheap.

There's plenty more really good one's out there.

One thing I'll point out is the 2003+ 4.6 blocks seem to have many more block/sleeve problems than the 4.0.

I'd probly still buy one if it was a steal, but I'd be ready for serious problems.

I found another 2003 that appears to be very nice. SE7 original owner with 121000 miles. Based on pics it looks in excellent condition. Ad states that has been well maintained and owner has all records. It is a little far from me and before I go look at it I was wondering what anyones opinion on the value is. Asking is $7750 which seems alittle high.
