Default Interesting oil fiter discovery

So this is more of an observation/statement post than a question but I guess I lucked out a bit. Before venturing into the Rover world I owned a 2000 Audi A4. It + what the state of Vermont calls "Roads" weren't doing well together so I needed something a bit more robust.

Prior to the change I bought a 5 pack of OEM filters from an online supplier on sale for like $8 each. I only got around to using 2 of them before I got rid of the Audi so had 3 remaining sitting in a corner not sure what to do with.

On a whim I decided to see what the comparable filter to it was. Turns out its the K&N 3001! The same "large" filter that is recommended for the Rover. I think I may give it a whirl and try one out thought for an oil filter there isn't much to screw up.

For those that want, the same online retailer sells 10 packs of the MANN filters in equivalent size for $55 + shipping just pm me for link rather that posting it here.

Both the K&N 3001 and the Mobil 1-301 are extra capacity filter made by the same company. I run the Mobil1 only cause the K&N is a couple bucks more at most part stores.
They are great quality filters.

Not terribly surprising. That spec filter is probably the single most used filter in the US, though I never recommend a K&N because they are way over priced.
I buy the WIX 51515 locally for under $5 so don't ever buy filters online, other than a case of Baldwin B2 which I got for $3.50 each, shipped. Both top line filters.
But good to know if you ever need to do an oil change and there are no places close other than an Audi dealer.

I use the K&N 3001, You have filters for your next 3 oil changes ready to go.

Buying a case of oil filters for the DIY'er is a waste of money.
Are you willing to sell those extra filters at a loss when you loose your truck for whatever reason?
I am running a Baldwin filter right now, I bought 3 for $15 shipped but I normally run NAPA, I use OEM size.
Wasting money on overpriced filters and oils is one of the best scams out there.

Someone was giving away oil filters...
3 K&N 3001 filters or 3 Baldwin Filters.
Which ones would you take?

Well, they were $3.50 each and both Disco's, the D90 and my F-250 all use the same filter.
But even if all I had was my '95 Disco and it was totaled, I'd buy another one and use the same filters.

edit: Before getting the good price on the Baldwins I was buying Wix 3 or 4 at a time for $4.50 ea. When I'm ready to do an oil change I don't want to have to go buy oil and/or a filter.

Red would be pretty cool.
The white K&N looks sweet too.

I've had a V6 SHO of some sort in my garage since 2003, have probably put 150k+ on them total in that time, plus track days here and there which mandates an oil change right after.

So, 50+ oil changes. Give or take.

But please, tell me more about how I'm tossing away money by buying FL-1As by the case (which I currently do). :-)
