Intermittent starting
hi all, looking for help here. I have a 2004 discovery 2 se with 101000 Miles. I am having some sort of electrical issue. Battery is new and 100% charged, terinmals are clean, and starter and alternator have passed tests at autozone and I am still having issues with consistent starts. Any ideas of where to look next?
Thanks!
Thanks!
Usually starter clicking means it's trying to do its job but it's not getting enough current from battery to crank the engine, or it's failing from wear but might still pass a bench test. So, either 1. a bad/weak battery from not being charged (bad alternator) or 2. a bad connection or 3. bad starter. Check/clean all battery connections; at terminals, where ground connects to engine and frame, positive to alternator, and the hard part; at the starter (tough to get to). If starter is original, that's what my money is on as the culprit. 2nd guess (but first thing to check) is a bad connection somewhere.
This has happened to me twice recently. First time was the starter, second was a malfunctioning BCU.Get your self a length of wire that will stretch from the Positive Battery cable to the small connector on the solenoid. Turn on the ignition, and use the wire to run power from the battery to the small connector on the solenoid. If it turns over you have an issue somewhere else, if it does not it is your starter.
Thanks for the responses. The ground connection to the engine is clean. I will clean the frame connection. I will look at the starter connection too. Can a starter that is starting to go bad still pass the starter test at autozone?
Not sure, but my bad starter was working fine when cold, but when hot it would not crank. The BCU malfunction was pretty random, would come and go. If it was not starting you could tap the BCU and it would start up.
Yes. My starter would not quit running even with the key off (Autozone replacement). I had to unhook the battery cable to make it stop. Autozone could not replicate this problem. Had to wait for the warranty center to test it. Did find a problem and refunded my money.
