Irregular idle on disco 94
Hi, I am brand new disco owner and have a Disco 94 SE auto VE8. Am on limited budget and interested in learning how to DIY auto repairs.
Its major problem at the moment is:
While foot is NOT on the accelerator pedal and car is stationary, the REV needle holds for a second then dips down and engine struggles then back up, then repeats until I rev it. Then same again after foot off the pedal. To the extend where while driving 2 days ago and after driving for 15mins (no probs) pulled up to a traffic light and it stalled, starts immediately. It idles generally at 500+ rpm then dip down to about 400 or 300.
This generally happens while in Drive, and so am putting into neutral while at traffic lights to stop it from dying.
We have had the spark plugs and cables replaced during a minimal service and mechanic told us that the transmission needs a service as slipping.
Could this problem be related to transmission or is it likely to be something completely different? Any ideas will be greatly apprechiated.
Thanks

Hey. From what I have heard it is the Idle Air Control Valve (IAC). Usually they are dirty and need to be cleaned. Also clean the throttle body while you are at it. If that does not solve the problem and the IAC is bad, I have also heard that the IAC from a 95 Chev Pickup with the 5.0 litre will fit on your 3.9, which is al lot cheaper than from the dealer. Best of luck.
