Default Joining the United States Marine Corps

So like the title says, I ship off to Parris Island april 13, and of all things that i should be worrying about before i leave, it is of course, my disco Want i want to ask is, is there anything i should do to the disco before i leave, because besides having my folks start the car up every once in a while, it won't be driven for at least 3 months.

On a side note, when i bought my disco a year ago, i paid a mechanic 180 dollars to replace the front breaks, believing him when he told me that it required blah, blah, blah. I decide to be a big guy and do the back brakes myself this past weekend, and felt like the most gullible person after realizing how easy it was to replace, lol.

98 disco
136900 miles

Congrats on joining the Marines.

Here is what you need to do to PROPERLY store your Disco, and this goes for ANY car or truck.
DO NOT start it every once in awhile, this is a old wives tale and will kill your exhaust and rust your engine from the inside out.
When you start it and let it idle for 15 min and then shut it backoff you are not allowing the engine/trans and exhaust to get hot enough to evaporate the condensation that collects inside everything from sitting and the water from the cats doing their job will rust out your exhaust faster than a prom dress comes off.
Drive around for 30 min to get everything good and hot.
Add fuel stabilizer, like Sta-Bil, fill the gas tank at the closest gas station and then drive it to where it is going to be parked.
Park it and then shut it off, put a battery tender on the battery and close the hood and lock the doors.
Pat her on the hood, give her a kiss and tell her that you will see her soon.
When you come back, wether it be 3 months or 3 years she will start right up first turn of the key.
It is also recommended to change the oil the day before you store it and then again the day after you get it out if it has been sitting for more than 6 months.
Also before you store it run it through the full service car wash with the underbody wash and wax.
You can buy a battery tender at Harbor Freight for pretty cheap.
If you cant put a battery tender on it then unhook the battery and put the battery in the garage.
But take note that leaving it with no battery for to long may mess up the alarm, I dont know why, but it can happen.
It is not hard to store a car, the hard part is taking it out of storage if not properly stored.
The gas tank must be full, less space for condensation.
Oil must be fresh, less contaminates to rust/clog/ruin bearings and the like.
It is also a good idea to put moth ***** under the hood and around the fresh air intake for the cabin so that mice and the like dont make a nest.
Dont park under a tree, tree sap and leaves will eat the paint.
Cover the leather seats with blankets if you can, condition them before you go.
Also if possible place jack stands under the axles to keep the weight of the truck off of the tires, they will go flat.
Do not place them under the frame, you dont want the axles to hang.
Now I have stored lots of cars and this is the BEST way to store them.

Good luck and God bless. Don't take the DIs personally. They were toilet trained at gunpoint.

Thumbs up

I don't think it can be said any better than this...
