Default sounds like a tractor...not good.

I've just completed replacing the timing chain cover gasket on my wifes '02 disco. Followed the RAVE instructions and apart from the odd tricky access problem everything went smoothly...or so I thought. All nuts, bolts and washers were accounted for and labeled so they went back in the same holes. Filled it up with oil and coolant last night and started it up and it sounded like a tractor...almost as if something was hitting something. Turned it off straight away.
I never changed or touched the timing chain and did not fiddle with any moving parts, just removed the oil pan and timing cover, replaced gaskets for both and re-assembled. I can't think what can be the issue...any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
I'll start tearing it apart again this weekend.

what is your oil pressure like? Did you pack the pump with any grease prior to fire up?

No i didn't and I was thinking this morning that may be the issue. The RAVE instructions didn't say anything about that.

The oil pump may need to be primed.

What grease do you recommend and do I literally just pack it full and put the timing chain cover back on and continue with the rest of the re-assemble?

Remove your oil filter and take a squirt oil can full of motor oil and pump oil into the oil pump, fill it full, replace the filter and you will be good to go.

Do what Spike said. It is a whole lot easier.....

Some people just put some grease in the pump to help it prime itsself.

ok, thanks for that. It will be much easier than tearing it all down again which I wasn't looking forward too.
